On Friday, March 21st, two Year 11 world-travel-focused English classes came together for a multicultural shared lunch. This event was organised to help us broaden our understanding of the food and history of the countries we had been researching over the past seven weeks. This hands-on learning experience was exciting for everyone, and we fully immersed ourselves in it.
The lunch challenged not only our English research and planning skills but also our cooking abilities. We discovered the origins of well-known dishes and had the opportunity to try a variety of unique foods. We began with a prayer of thanks, led by Tex, before filling our plates and our bellies.
Some of the highlights included churros from Spain made by Courtney, Khameer bread from the UAE by Serena, and rice balls from Japan by Ethan. There were many other creative dishes prepared by our innovative classmates. My chosen country was France, so I made éclairs. It was my first time making them, and I learned a lot about traditional foods from both my own country and my classmates' countries. I also enjoyed discussing what everyone was planning to make.
By the end of lunch, nearly all the food had been eaten, with some going back for fourths and fifths! Many teachers joined us and commented on the wide range of unique dishes and all the effort that had gone into making them. One student, Emma, said, “I liked trying new food, and I enjoyed making something for my class. It was a fun and different shared lunch.” The majority of the class had positive feedback.
Overall, it was a successful, exciting, and learning-filled shared lunch - I hope we get to do it again!
