Congratulations to all our students that competed in Winter Tournaments this year. It was awesome to see so many involved in their respective competitions.
Thank you to all our coaches, managers, umpires, officials, parent helpers and our amazing Teachers in Charge (TIC’s) who make this week possible for our students. Without our TIC’s, we are not able to participate/enter, as these tournaments are Secondary School Sport sanctioned and require a member of school staff to be present at all times. So, thank you!
Overall Results:
Senior A Netball (South Island Secondary Schools Tournament – Christchurch)
Our Senior A girls punched well above their weight to finish in an amazing 11th place in A Grade, which has the 32 top school teams from throughout the South Island competing. There are a further 32 teams in B Grade and also 16 teams in C Grade. To put this in perspective, our girls were 11th out of 80 teams. Our SPC team is also the only Eastern team in A Grade and we are now the second ranked team in Southland. Well done to you all for a superb tournament.
Senior Mixed Hockey (South Island Secondary Schools Tournament – Timaru)
The Mixed Hockey team are in a rebuilding phase, with only three players from the previous year's team returning this year. Although this made our team very young (majority U15), it provided such an amazing opportunity for this team to really start getting combinations clicking looking towards next year's tournament. Winning all their pool games was a huge achievement, and we are super proud of you coming in 6th place overall, out of 14 teams.
U15 Rugby – Combined with Blue Mountain College (Rural Livestock South Island Rugby Tournament – Prebbleton, Christchurch)
SPC had nine boys join the BMC team to play in the Co-Ed U15 Tournament this year. They gelled together seamlessly and came away with some impressive results and were placed 1st in Division Two. Convincing pool game wins against Golden Bay, St Kevin’s, and Geraldine saw them easily through to a quarter final against Ellesmere. Unfortunately, one of the BMC lads was injured in this game, catching a stray boot and being treated for a concussion. This meant the game was cut short, so BMC recorded the win 56 – 10. Pumped up for the semi-final which was against Roncalli, the team was unstoppable with a 50 – 24 win! This putting the team through to the final which would be a local derby with the boys facing off against Maruawai. Bragging rights were secured with an exciting (nerve racking) 22 – 14 win! Congratulations to the players, coaches, management and the teams super supporters on a fabulous tournament.
First X1 Boys Football (Linwood Football Tournament – Invercargill)
Year 13 boys Ashton Wadsworth and Corey Feenstra joined the Maruawai team for tournament. Day One saw a couple of close losses to Roncalli College and Aurora College. They then started Day Two off with a good win against Dunstan High before getting to rest up with a bye to end the Day. Day Three started off with a loss to Bayfield High, and then they re-grouped for an impressive win over Central Southland College 5 - 1. Day Four, and the boys were up against our old mates Trinity College, but unfortunately, this ended in another close loss, 4 – 2. Thanks so much to Maruawai for including our boys.
First X1 Girls Football (Lotto Football Tournament – Dunedin)
Senior girls Hannah Hargest, Laiken Trainor and Amiera Kortbaoui joined the Northern Southland College team to compete at this year's tournament. The girls had an awesome time, and although results did not quite go their way on the first couple of days, with losses to Craighead, Trinity, Wakatipu, and Bayfield, they were able to finish off the tournament with a couple of great wins, beating Dunstan High 2 – 1, and Columba/Queens 2nd X1, 4 – 0. A huge thank you to coach, Wendy Coghlan, manager, Bridget Ponga, and assistant coach, Ash Brewer, who are all staff members from Northern Southland College. We very much appreciate your time and efforts, ladies.
