Principal's Comment

Kia ora e te whanau

This week the College has been quite settled, with most events and activities being ‘business as usual’. As we count down my last two terms as Principal of St Peter’s College, I want to emphasise that the focus for our Senior Leadership Team will be consistency and a commitment to maintain the status quo with no big changes in our systems and processes to keep things as steady as we can for our students, who are at the heart of all we do. As mentioned in previous newsletters, this term is the final full term for our senior students. Therefore, consolidating routines to ensure students are finding a balance between their academic endeavours, extracurricular activities and having time to rest and recover, is important.

This weekend the annual Bishop’s Shield will be held at Verdon College in Invercargill. We are very proud of all our students who are competing in the many events which include Drama, Prepared Speech, Debating, Impromptu Speech and Scripture. We also wish our Under 16 and First XV rugby teams, as well as our netball teams, all the best for their semi-final games on Saturday and hope as many of you can come along and support as possible. There are clear links between enjoyment in sport and cultural endeavours, and academic motivation and success. While we will not be the end point of our students’ educational journey, we are where they develop the skills and passion to become lifelong learners; learners who will be empowered to challenge and shape their future as they pursue their personal excellence.

We followed past pupil Tori Peeters' journey to the Olympic games this week and it was great to see Mrs Carolyn Hunter on the Breakfast show with students Ava Wiegersma and Olivia Sanson, recalling her school days. Our experiences allow us to climb mountains, leap over hurdles, swim through currents, sail through stormy times, work collaboratively and accomplish a variety of goals. We endure through all of this and have our successes and failures along the way. Whether it's success or failure, we go forward and endure, as we are called to fulfil our purpose. As we all continue on our Olympic Journey, let’s not forget to acknowledge the presence of the Lord in our lives, from whom we receive protection, guidance and an uplifting hand no matter what we face. We are all winners when we stand tall in faith. Let us remember why we endure, and reflect on Isaiah 41:10 "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

We wish all our parents and wider community every blessing as we work together to encourage and raise our young people’s quest to achieve at the highest level no matter what they take on.
