Year 10 Commerce Class

Posted Tuesday October 31, 2023

The year 10 Commerce class had a great day prepping, cooking, and selling their food as part of the Commerce curriculum on Friday October 20th, 2023. It has been a steady three weeks build up to this day where the students learnt about proper planning to produce and eventually sell a product of their choice to their peers. The students had a booklet as a guide to plan for the Market Day; list the ingredients needed to produce their product, record the estimated costs involved, record an estimated sale quantity, prepare a poster to advertise their product, calculate a selling price inclusive of a profit amount. School Market Day has many positive outcomes. By participating in school Market Day, children not only learn valuable entrepreneurial skills but also develop their communication, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. There was a variety of food stalls on display in the technology block area including milk shakes, ham stew with bun, donuts, soda drinks, sausage sizzle, ice creams, pizza, lollies, ginger muffins, and much more.

The Market Day was for the students to have a first-hand experience of becoming an entrepreneur and putting their learnings in Commerce into practice. I believe that we have achieved that goal! Many thanks to the teachers who gave up their precious time and space to make this day a reality. Special acknowledgement to Mrs. Lisa Perkins for providing the Foods kitchen space to the students to do their preparation and providing the additional guidance and support and to Mr. Will Byars for his words of advice. Words of appreciation also go to all other staff for rendering their support in whatever way possible to make the Market Day happen. I also would like to convey my sincere appreciation to all the parents and guardians for their relentless support to the students. At the end of the day, the event was a great success.
