On Friday, November 22nd, the St Peter’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh group went for their practice journey out at Cross Hill Farm. Our group consisted of four Year 9 boys, five Year 10 girls, and Mr. and Mrs. Ryan. On our first day, our objective was to make it to the hut we would be setting up our tents around later that night. As we were walking through the farmland, with guidance from our map, we were stopping at waypoints. At each waypoint we learnt how to take bearings with our compasses and identify landforms around us. Once we successfully made it to the hut, we worked together to set up tents, keeping in mind the slope we were on. Afterwards, we all managed to create a bonfire and cook dinner along with some yummy s’mores. It was an enjoyable bonding time within our group. The night was a little wet, carrying on to the morning, but once we got going, it cleared up. Mr. Ryan taught us about the various flora and fauna around us and the history of the land we were walking on. As we learnt and walked upon ridge lines, saddles, and gullies, we were identifying the trees and plants that were dotted along our path. I think we all learnt a lot on this journey and have all taken knowledge away to carry with us on our future adventurous journeys. I am very excited for our next trip! Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Weller for giving us access to their property.
