Te Whare Tapa Whā and Hauora – Yum!

Posted Thursday August 22, 2024

Gingerbread, M and Ms, blue and pink icing and a generous dolop of Mātauranga Māori, Māori knowledge, was the recipe for a happy and engaged Year 11 Food and Nutrion class two weeks ago.  Concentration was so intense as the ākonga constructed their whare, that I didn’t dare interview any of them!

The rangatahi had been learning about the concept of haoura, wellbeing in Māori terms.  Having baked the gingerbread they were constructing their whare tapa whā, their four walled houses.

While everyone took great care, in the end, one house did collapse occasioning groans and laughter.  Then the conversation turned serious – what does this tell us about our hauora, our wellbeing?  What do we need to do to protect our wellbeing?  Profound and meaningful learning for that day and beyond – Preparation for Life we call that at St Peter’s, Hato Petera.
