The Year 11 Engineering the Future team have been learning about heat transfer. We investigated the insulating properties of a mysterious substance called starlite. The pupils coated eggs with the insulator, then blasted them over the bunsen burner. The coating expanded and charred but the egg inside stayed raw! The alternative activity was to coat cardboard, this was heated and the card on the back was almost cool enough to touch.
Not recommended at home without suitable precautions!
