Agricultural Science Students Field Trip

Posted Thursday September 5, 2024

The morning of Wednesday, 4th September, saw the sun shining and the birds singing.  It also saw Level 2 and 3 Agricultural Science students once again hopping into the car and heading off on another farm adventure.  Today we visited the Morris farm at Tapanui to look at lambing management and animal behaviour for Level 2, and to collect data on the profitability of sheep farming for Level 3.

Students observed lambs being born, how ewes interact with their newborn lambs, and how important the mothering-up period is for colostrum ingestion and future income as a result.  Georjah was able to get up close with a cast ewe, who, after a gentle roll from us, was able to scoot up and rejoin her woolly compatriots further down the hill.

Despite the wet paddock conditions, a good day was had by all, and some valuable data was collected.  Huge thanks go out to the Morris family for hosting us- the students gained a lot out from their visit.
