Kia ora e te Whānau,
At the moment it feels like all the mainstream media tells us about education is what rangatahi “can’t do.” Apparently, they can’t read, they can’t write and they certainly can’t do Maths. The statistics being thrown around are not great, and for whānau it might feel like “Well, why am I sending my tamariki to school?”
So, today, I’m going to share the good news about the great results our kaiako and rangatahi achieve together here at St Peter’s, Hato Petera. The minimum school leaving qualification is NCEA Level 2, normally achieved in year 12. Achieving Level 3 in year 13 with specific subject and literacy criteria grants someone University Entrance. Not all ākonga need UE and so don’t work towards it.
2023 NCEA Statistics
Qualification | St Peter's by participation | National by roll |
---|---|---|
University Entrance | 100% | 49.7% |
Level 3 | 91% | 67.7% |
Level 2 | 92% | 73.2% |
In May more than half of our year 11s began their Level 2 NCEA journey with the Reading, Writing and Numeracy Co-requisite assessments. Again, we have lots to be pleased about.
May 2024 NCEA Co-requisite assessments
Assessment | St Peter's | National |
---|---|---|
Reading | 89% | 58.6% |
Writing | 61% | 55.1% |
Numeracy | 73% | 45.2% |
As a school community we have lots to be proud of and to celebrate on the teaching and learning front – there is definitely good news and our rangatahi sure “can do”!
