On Saturday 16th March, three teams of keen speakers headed down to Invercargill for the Mee & Henry Law Southland Regional Schools' Debating Competition. As this was the first time in a long time that St Peter's has attended this event, and given that most students were first-time debaters, we went with the goal of using it as a learning opportunity, and any wins would be the icing on the cake.
Teams had three rounds of debates, with each debate having a 30 minute prep time. The draw was completely mixed, so junior teams were as likely to debate against Yr 9's as Yr 13's! It was fantastic to see students making massive improvements as they were able to apply the feedback from each round to the next, and it was encouraging that every team won at least one of their three debates.
Special congratulations must go to Matilda Macleod who has been selected for the Southland Development team.
Well done to all involved! Mrs Kortbaoui and I are so proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zones, for the sportsmanship you displayed, and for the community spirit you showed as you supported each other.
